I was blown away by how knowledgeable Heather was about breastfeeding. Before the baby came, I had no idea that there could even be a breastfeeding problem. Then my baby was born and had trouble latching onto the breast. I was panicked and began to give bottles but felt like every bottle I gave was getting me further from my goal. Heather swept into my apartment on day 8 of my daughter's life and literally saved me. She was able to get my baby to latch on but more importantly she was able to teach me how to do it and she had me practice it over and over until I had it down. She also gave me great advice about boosting my milk supply; it was a little low in the beginning and I was needing to use some formula. Heather told me that formula is an important tool in fixing many breastfeeding problems. I was so relieved bc you read all the time about how formula is bad and ruins breastfeeding, etc. Anyhow, I nursed my daughter for a long time and basically have Heather to thank for it. She was also available at any time to answer any follow-up questions I had, even when my baby was older and I was returning to work. I give her an A plus, plus, plus!

I can't describe the help that Heather Kelly gave to us at the most crucial and vulnerable time in my wife's life. Our baby was 5 days old and the pediatrician said that he wasn't gaining well and that we needed to supplement with formula. My wife was really upset and one of her friends told her not to do that because it would ruin her chances to breastfeed. We called Heather and immediately on the phone she alleviated my wife's concern. She told us to offer formula after every breastfeeding session and explained to us how formula is often needed in the early days and weeks and explained that our problem was really common and--more importantly--that she could give us a solution. Heather came to see us at the very next feeding (4 hours later) and gave my wife a specific plan to bring up her milk supply so that she would be able to get full breastfeedings to our son. She alleviated my wife's concerns over and over; she explained that boosting milk supply would take some time and she gave my wife instructions on how to pump and how to give bottles. My wife actually cried when she left because she was so relieved. Heather checked in every day and after about two weeks, my wife had extra milk to store in the freezer and our son was a breastfeeding champion. I recommend Heather Kelly so highly. I had no idea how important it was to have someone knowledgeable about breastfeeding come to our home.

My son is now 15, but when I Heather was the FIRST non-relative to come visit my home! I had attended the Lactation class at the Y the week BEFORE I gave birth, because I was 46 (!) and knew nothing about babies; the first time I held a baby was when my own appeared. So Heather came the day I came home from the hospital, and completely put my mind at ease. She showed us how to arrange the pillows we already owned on our couch, so I was in the most comfortable position. She advised both my husband and I about pumping, so he could take a turn feeding our boy. I continued going to her classes, and thus feeding my son was a breeze. I completely credit her advice, good humor, and positive outlook on making the first months of my motherhood SOOO much more pleasant! Heather and I have remained friends ever since. I would HIGHLY recommend her to any mom in need of lactation advice and counseling!!!

Heather is an amazing resource for Upper West Side moms.  We had trouble getting a good latch with our newborn.  To resolve this issue we first called in a different consultant, who went through generic advice, but could not clarify exactly what was needed to get a good latch.  Our experience with heather was completely different.  We found her to be a patient teacher, who could clearly explain how to get a good latch.  By the end of the hour session, our latch issues were resolved.  She also had other helpful tips on bottle feeding and other newborn care related issues.  She also did frequent check-ins after our appointment to see how things were holding up.  Again, this was very different from our first consultant.  I highly recommend Heather for your lactation consultant needs.

Heather was a life saver. I was having a lot of trouble getting a good latch with my 1 week old and the breast feeding process was very painful. I  was stressed and confused on how to feed my baby as I had heard different things from the nurses and lactation consultants at the hospital. Heather came for a home visit immediately and taught me how to feed my baby. She was an incredible teacher - sympathetic, knowledgeable, and effective. She showed me how to feed and then let me practice many times with her guidance so I would be able to do it after she left. She also wrote all the details down so I would have it as a reference for later if needed.
She put us on a plan that increased my milk supply, allowed my nipples to heal, and enabled me to give my baby the breast milk he needed. Follow up after the visit with Heather was also great - she answered my questions and monitored the progress we were making. I highly recommend Heather to anyone needing a lactation consultant.

My wife was really anxious about breastfeeding and was nervous because we were giving bottles and some formula to our baby when he was five days old. As soon as she spoke to Heather all her fears were eliminated. Heather made my wife feel great about everything she had been doing to make sure that our baby was fed. The best thing about Heather is that she is very capable of explaining what is going on and giving specific instructions on how to fix our specific problem. We felt like our baby was the only baby in the world who wasn’t “getting” breastfeeding. Heather explained how milk supply works in the early days and weeks and she also explained why newborn babies sometimes need a little help before they can become pros at breastfeeding. I loved how she included me as the husband in our consultation. I felt like all my questions were also answered. I was pleasantly surprised by how knowledgable Heather was and by how easily she was able to reassure my wife that her issues were common issues and that they are simple to resolve. I never write reviews but I felt like this was one worth writing.

Heather helped me nurse after an emergency c-section. While the pregnancy was easy, the birthing process was quite, unexpected and recovery was difficult. Heather was amazing. She helped us get started pumping and through all the “nipple” challenges (mostly pain and low production) to a point where I was firing on all 5 cylinders AND having ample production. Do you want to nurse? She can HELP you make this happen. She’s a Mom of 4 children (!!!) and she’s gentle yet tough. I am grateful that we found Heather to be our lactation consultant and I STRONGLY recommend her for her knowledge, experience and genuine character. I also want to add that my son *NEVER* had an ear infection (NOT ONCE!) and he’s exceptionally gifted in Language and Reading. I truly believe breastfeeding had something to do with all of this. (Because “Nursing” encourages a baby to use the muscles in their mouths in a critical way.) I trust Heather to be strong support to you if Nursing is an experience you wish to give your Baby.

I met Heather through a support group that she led at the 92Y. Heather helped me through nursing two children for more than one year. She helped me through mastitis 3 times amongst other issues like overproduction and weaning. Heather is smart, warm, well spoken, easy to talk to and very realistic. She helps you make nursing work in your life with realistic expectations. Never a judgement. Heather will help you.
